when it rains it pours...

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 14, 2009, 9:41 PM
and the flood of june 2009 has come (i just added 16 drawings all at once, and that's not the whole of it)...

i finally broke down and bought some watercolors (winsor and newton pocket pack). though i hate to say it (what with my predilection for all things ink), but i really, really like them...

i've taken up machine quilting. "Whaaa" you ask. i like to think of it as drawing with a sewing machine (i saw something on ovation tv about a girl who does typewriter portraiture in public, so there...). my wife and i actually started a business and we're now making money and being not angry at the same time :)

lots of ideas churning in my head, interesting things are sure to come...

my primary media are ink and paper-- pens, markers, quill and brush -- cotton, bristol, vellum.

stylistically, i draw inspiration from traditional draughtsmanship, tattoo work, Dr. Seuss, coloring books and silhouettes.

most of my work focuses on the line, magnifying the outline of an object to the point where it ceases to be outline and becomes the focus of the drawing itself -- the line is no longer a line, but a compound structure of solid fill between two unbroken edges.

at a metastylistic level all of my drawings separate foreground from background (depth is created by conscious layering rather than perspective), representation is constructed from the abstract motions of drawing, every component of the work is controlled by the act of drawing, traditional products created by imitating computerized/digital processes and ideas -- filters, algorithms, segmentations and binary oppositions placed directly into the context of physical interactions among body, utensil and paper.

with extremely dry/esoteric humour splattered on top. (e.g. the "britishness" of this whole description :) )

the aim of life is
to live, and to live
means to be aware,
joyously, drunkenly,
serenely, divinely
aware
